** Redesigning women

------------------------------------------------------------

Just a few days ago, we celebrated Mother’s Day, and it has me reflecting on all the women in my life.

My Mom and Mother-in-law are both accomplished entrepreneurs and loving kin-keepers. I see a spark of them in my own girls, who are carving out their futures as independent women.

I am also fortunate to work alongside so many amazing women here in Knoxville and across the country.

Recently, I was invited to a small gathering of mayors at Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence. I was thrilled to meet Vice President Harris and thank her for the federal grants that have come to Knoxville in recent years. She is an inspiring leader!

I also had some time to connect with other women mayors. We have a special bond based on shared experiences. Many are the first women mayors of their cities and sometimes -- even several years into their jobs -- get mistaken for staff at events. This has happened to me too!

When I first met Scranton Mayor Paige Cognecetti (beside me in the photo above) at the New Mayors Boot Camp in December 2019, she was expecting her first child. Five years later, we've both been re-elected, and she's the mom of a 4-year-old and a toddler. All this change and growth while leading her city.

My generation isn't the first to have families and achieve our goals of leadership and community building. And -- with the leadership of strong, inspiring women -- we won't be the last.

Very truly yours,

Indya Kincannon
