Breaking news, John:
Common Cause is taking legal action to SAVE Wisconsinites' right to vote absentee – and end the anti-voter plot to continue the ban of ballot drop boxes in our state. [1][2]
For years, millions of Wisconsin voters have relied on secure drop boxes as a convenient and secure method to return their absentee ballots – and found them particularly useful during the pandemic.
But after Trump’s failed effort to overthrow the 2020 election, election deniers painted a target on ballot drop boxes – filing a series of lawsuits to take this option away from voters statewide.
And unfortunately, in 2022, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled 4 to 3 to do away with all drop boxes, disenfranchising countless voters who relied on drop boxes to return their absentee ballots.
Now, in 2024, with more pro-voter justices on the bench, there's an opportunity to overturn this decision and bring back drop boxes statewide.
John, I'll share our arguments in a moment, but first I need to ask for your help.
You see, this WON’T be the last time Common Cause needs to take legal action in support of voters’ rights this year. It’s the right thing to do – but every case we get involved in stretches our limited resources and adds an extra burden to our legal team’s capacity.
So if you want to see Common Cause continue to show up for voters in 2024 – and I believe it’s urgently necessary that we do so – can you support legal actions like this with a contribution today?
Here’s the case for drop boxes we’re making in our legal brief:
-
Increased Voter Participation: Drop boxes provide a secure, low-cost way for Wisconsinites to cast their vote. In previous elections, thousands of voters used drop boxes to return their absentee ballots.
-
Voter Accessibility: Drop boxes help level the playing field. They're especially important for communities facing obstacles to voting, like people with disabilities or those from racial minority or low-income backgrounds. Whether you live in a rural area or a bustling city, drop boxes make voting more accessible by reducing the distance you have to travel to cast your ballot.
-
Secure Voting Alternative: With drop boxes, you can trust that your vote will count. They offer a secure alternative to the postal service, bypassing the delays and uncertainties that sometimes come with mail-in voting.
John, your past support has been instrumental in our efforts to defend democracy in Wisconsin, and we need your help once again.
