📢 Take Action: Promote investment into the addiction crisis

In 2022, nearly 108,000 people died from overdoses, and over 48 million people had substance use disorder. Too few receive the treatment and services they need.

The issue: Our current approach to the addiction crisis is clearly insufficient, as the crisis continues to grow and deaths continue to reach record-high levels.

How we can help: We urgently need a more comprehensive response and financial investment that treats addiction like the public health crisis it is. The Comprehensive Addiction Resources Emergency (CARE) Act would:

- Provide state and local governments with $125 billion in federal funding over 10 years to support a public health response to the crisis, including nearly $1 billion per year directly to tribal governments and organizations.

Take action: Send a letter to your members of Congress to encourage them to support the CARE Act to provide a new, comprehensive approach to the addiction crisis that more appropriately matches the scope of the emergency.

🗣️ Hear From Our Expert: Substance use prevention and reducing stigma

Our SVP of Prevention, Linda Richter, recently spoke with Children and Family Futures about her work in the field and what keeps her motivated:

“I would really like to be a voice in reducing the stigma for families and for young people who are facing substance use challenges.

And working toward a new norm in society where it’s not just the responsibility of parents to protect kids – but it’s really the responsibility of literally any adult who interacts with the child to do what they can to ensure that those kids develop in a healthy way and do not feel the need or the pull to substance use.”
