John, I have some big news – news I never imagined I’d be sharing so soon after we started Teachers Unify. But as shocked and, admittedly, nervous I am, I’m also so excited about what this means for our movement. Let me explain:

This is my 32nd year of teaching. Yes, 32! That’s a long time to do anything, let alone teaching young children. But that experience also makes it undeniable to me that this job has fundamentally changed in the past few years. And to do right by my fellow teachers and my school community, what I’m doing has to change, too.

So here’s my news: I’m taking a leave of absence next school year, and focusing 100% of my energy on our work to help end gun violence in schools and communities.

I know this is only possible so soon because people like you have been so generous in fueling Teachers Unify. So I have to ask: Can you chip in right now to keep this momentum pushing even further? ([link removed])

John, it’s been nearly 12 years since I survived the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. I still teach in the same district, and in each of my students’ little innocent faces, I see how much work is still left to do to keep our schools safe.

That’s why I’m taking this leave, and dedicating every minute I can to empowering teachers to end this crisis.

John, I know in my soul that educators can lead the change we need. We’re just not being heard. So I’m not stepping away from teaching – I’m stepping into a full-time amplification of my fellow teachers’ voices.

Now, I’ll spend each day ensuring that teachers have a seat at the table for the decisions that impact educators, students, and their families.

But I’m still one person, and we need an army of people standing together. There is so much work to do, and I believe so strongly that we’re the team to do it. So as I kick off this new chapter of our work, I’m counting on your help more than ever.

Giving up a steady paycheck is a big risk, but it’s worth it to protect our schools from gun violence and help end this devastation. With so much work to do – and so much within our grasp now – will you chip in $25 to empower the teachers who will win this fight for all of us? ([link removed])
