John,
Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are running on a promise to extend expiring portions of the Trump-GOP tax scam. Trump even told a room of wealthy donors―at a recent $50 million fundraiser hosted by a billionaire GOP donor―that he’s going to cut their taxes even further.[1]
Now, a new report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) tells us exactly what an extension of the Trump tax scam will cost U.S. taxpayers.[2]
Combined, renewing these tax cuts will cost almost $5 trillion over 10 years, with nearly half of those tax cuts going to individuals and businesses making over $400,000 a year.
Instead of extending tax cuts for the rich, Congress should let those tax cuts expire and use that new revenue to lower costs for working families while paying down the federal debt.
Write to your senators and representative today and tell them to let tax scam provisions benefiting individuals and corporations making over $400,000 a year expire.
Republicans want to double down on their trickle-down economic policies. But if we were to let the worst elements of the tax scam expire, we could take $1.9 trillion in new tax revenue and provide every child with free preschool and childcare, every parent paid family leave, and every student with free public college―while still having billions leftover to pay down the federal debt.
Raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations is supported by 79% of voters, including 63% of Republicans. This is good policy and good politics.[3]
We should restore the corporate tax rate to 35% from 21%, tax wealth like work so more of the income of the very wealthy is taxed through a billionaire tax, remove incentives for offshoring American jobs, and permanently restore adequate funding for the IRS to crack down on rampant tax evasion by the wealthy and big corporations.
Write to your senators and representative today and demand they let the portions of the Trump tax scam for the rich and corporations expire.
If we lose this battle, congressional Republicans will continue to use the exploding debt caused by their tax cuts as an excuse to cut critical programs like Social Security, Medicare, nutrition, and more.
Thank you for taking action today,
