International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia

Taking place annually on May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) was founded in Québec more than 20 years ago and is now recognized around the world to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by 2SLGBTQI people across the globe.

Around the world, societies are bearing witness to an unprecedented and exponential rise in anti-2SLGBTQI hate. Unfortunately, Canada has been no exception in this regard. This past year we’ve witnessed an increase in anti-trans policies and policy proposals emerging provincially and federally, and also rising rates of hate crimes, hate speech, and hate in the form of coordinated anti-trans protests in cities across Canada.

Egale Canada’s 2024 IDAHOBIT and Victims and Survivors of Crime Week initiatives are generously supported by the Department of Justice.

Visit our IDAHOBIT webpage for resources and actions you can take to combat hate against 2SLGBTQI communities.

Egale Canada and Local 2SLGBTQI Organizations Granted Party Status to Challenge New Brunswick’s Policy 713

We are pleased to share that Egale Canada, along with New Brunswick-based 2SLGBTQI organizations Alter Acadie, Chroma NB, and Imprint Youth, have been granted leave to intervene as added parties in litigation challenging the Government of New Brunswick’s changes to Policy 713.

Our priority in this case is to defend 2SLGBTQI young people who are impacted by this policy, and to fight for their right to feel safe and accepted at school.

Egale Canada Welcomes Historic Canadian Blood Services Apology

For decades, Egale Canada has been actively advocating for Canadian Blood Services (CBS) to end their blood ban, and later deferral, for men who have sex with men (MSM), as well as some trans people. As a member of CBS’ 2SLGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee, we welcome their long-overdue apology for this discriminatory policy.

This is a historic moment for 2SLGBTQI communities in Canada who have been calling on CBS to adopt gender-neutral, behaviour-based screening methods.

New Rainbow Action Hub Resource: Messaging Guide for 2SLGBTQI Advocacy

The rise in anti-2SLGBTQI hate is often coordinated and has strategic messaging attached to it. To counter this hate, it’s important to have messaging that is purposeful, strategic and direct.

Egale has created Inclusive Narratives: A Messaging Guide for 2SLGBTQI Advocacy to provide the tools needed by advocates and organizations to develop effective messaging to combat the ongoing rise in anti-2SLGBTQI hate.
