UNC Chapel Hill slashed $2.3M in funding for DEI initiatives and—tellingly—redirected the money toward public safety and policing
May 14, 2024
Dear Friend,
One virtue of the Claremont Institute is our prescience in spotting political and social trends in their infancy. Long before DEI-mania (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) swept the United States and took hold of higher education, we realized the incipient harm these anti-American policies posed.
And so, we acted.
In January 2022, Scott Yenor, senior director of state coalitions at the Claremont Institute’s Center for the American Way of Life, authored a comprehensive report on “critical social justice” efforts across North Carolina’s university system. We evaluated each public university in the state (16 total) on the resources—personnel, programs, salaries, funding, etc.—devoted to this pernicious ideology. The results, as you can see below, were not encouraging.

It is with tremendous pleasure and pride that just yesterday it was announced the Board of Trustees at UNC Chapel Hill slashed funding ($2.3M) for DEI initiatives and—tellingly—redirected the money toward public safety and policing. This is an incredible victory for justice and the American way of life. We hope UNC’s sister schools follow its lead.
Of course, it is not just the North Carolina university system that received our scrutiny. We have similar studies on higher education in Texas, Florida, Idaho, Alabama, Maine, and California. These reports have so far helped to achieve similar successes rolling back DEI in Alabama, Florida, and Texas. These “blueprints” for evaluating and ending DEI in our schools are free. We encourage patriots everywhere to read, learn, and begin rollback campaigns wherever they see the need.

As always, the Claremont Institute could not continue programs like our anti-DEI initiatives in higher education without your support. If you have not considered giving in the past, please do so today.
