Today,Events DC voted to commit $5 million to provide cash assistance to undocumented workers. The details of this plan are still being developed. It is clear that this money would not have been made available if not for the tireless work of impacted residents and the organizations that support them. In less than a week we had over 1,000 emails, dozens of tweets, and over 60 organizations sign on to say #dontexcludeme!

This $5 million will be critical to help undocumented residents sustain themselves throughout the pandemic. There are tens of thousands of undocumented workers in DC, who have been fully locked out of government cash assistance. This is a first step by a government entity to start to meet these needs.
Throughout this fight, we have been clear that there are many excluded workers from many backgrounds that are being left out. We will not be divided.
We will continue the fight by maintaining the collaboration among the diverse coalition that came together, ensuring fast and low-barrier process for excluded workers to access funds, advocating to improve DOES implementation of unemployment benefits so the most workers can access the full amount of funds they are eligible and fast, and telling the stories of excluded workers from many walks of life.
