Hospitals across Central Nebraska train residents how to stop a bleedKSNB Local, May 8th Hospitals across Central Nebraska are training people how to stop a bleed. The goal is to show life-threatening blood loss looks like; as each year, 5 million people die from accidental trauma. Learning how to stop is knowledge everyone should learn because you never know when you have to stop a bleed. Mindy Walters is the Trauma Program Manager at CHI Health St. Francis, and said, “Many people think of big disaster, school shootings, and things like that where they need this kind of training but really what it boils down to is everyday injuries,” said Walters. “You may be driving along and come across a car accident. Your neighbor may be cutting trees and accidentally drop the chainsaw on their leg. Those are more of the type of injuries that we see. But again, you want to be prepared if something major does happen as well.” Walters has been an emergency room nurse for over 20 years, and said some people think stopping a bleed is common sense. But there are times it’s not simple. |
| | “I learned that the packing the wound is the most...one of the most important things,” said Janet Enck, participant in Stop the Bleed training. “I would’ve never thought to do that. I would’ve just done pressure, so you know I would’ve done it wrong. So at least now I know how to do it correctly.” Enck said she experienced an incident when her dog had a gapping wound, and she didn’t know how to treat it. Enck also works with the elderly. Learning how to stop a bleed is a life-saving skill we all should learn, because you never know when you’ll be called upon to save a life. | |
