"When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, I felt that there was
a lot of misinformation and a lack of general information to educate
people about diabetes and eye health management. Some people will say,
"What you don't know won't hurt you," but
that's not true. What you don't know can hurt you, and in
my case, it did hurt me."

Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults aged
18-64 years. Like Serena says, education about diabetes and eye
health management is a critical tool to prevent or delay vision loss
or the progression of other diabetes-related eye diseases. 

 

Resources provided by initiatives like Focus on Diabetes® brings
awareness to diabetes and eye health and explains how routine
comprehensive eye exams can provide early detection to lower the risk
for complications.

 

"Over the years, I've learned the importance of
prioritizing my diabetes and eye health and asking for help along the
way. Now, I share my story with peers and support groups to teach
others how to stay on track. Helping them helps me stay accountable
for my own diabetes management too-we help each other!"
