If you ware one of those, “I will show up for myself when….” people...this email is for you. It can feel impossible (even inappropriate) to prioritize our self care and personal work when the world is on fire. I can find a million reasons to put my personal wellbeing last on the priority list. It sounds something like this:
I’ll take care of myself when I finish this project.
I’ll take care of myself once I’ve figured everything out.
I’ll take care of myself when everyone else is taken care of.
I’ll take care of myself after I send out one more email.
I’ll take care of myself when I make more money.
I’ll take care of myself when the world is not in crisis.
The thing is, waiting around to take care of yourself almost guarantees that it will be too late before you decide “it’s time”. Whether it’s burning out, getting sick, dropping the ball, chronic anxiety…not taking care of yourself will always catch up with you.
We can’t show up for anyone if we are not showing up for ourselves. When our self care is rooted in mutual care and responsibility, it is generous and generative. It unleashes the capacity to be more and do more…together. Self care in this way is not just something you give yourself…it’s what you give to each other because it helps us build the capacity to be more response-able to all that is emerging.
