Simon Heffer is one of Britain’s great political commentators, having written extensively on a wide range of topics throughout his career as a historian, journalist, and author. Simon has served The Telegraph, The Spectator, and Daily Mail throughout his career in journalism. He writes a weekly column in The Sunday Telegraph. He has written several biographies and a series of books on Britain’s history, including an authorised biography of Enoch Powell, for which Cambridge University award him a PhD in modern history. Simon is currently Professor of History at the University of Buckingham.


Doors will open at 17:30, with the event starting off with a drinks reception before Tom sits down with Simon to discuss a wide range of topics related to economics, public policy, and much more.

Paul Reynolds works internationally as an independent adviser on ‘senior governance’, political economy, and governmental reform, with an emphasis on countries in conflict. He has worked for government ministers and political opposition leaders in more than 70 countries.

The IEA Book Club will be hosting an upcoming event with Liberal Democrat Peer Lord Clement-Jones on his latest book, Living with the Algorithm: Servant or Master?: AI Governance and Policy for the Future. Chairing this event is IEA Director of Academic Outreach Syed Kamall.

The book addresses concerns about the impact of AI on politics, economics, and culture by considering how governments should respond to the ever-evolving world of technological progress taking into account the ethics of AI.


Lord Clement-Jones is a Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords. As the former Chair of the House of Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, he has been instrumental in legislative discussions on AI and technology. His work extends to advocacy for ethical governance and the responsible use of AI. Lord Clement-Jones is a founding member of the OECD Parliamentary Group on AI and a former consultant to the Council of Europe’s Ad Hoc Committee on AI (CAHAI).
