Friend -
Hope this email finds you with your thinking cap on and your radar tuned to the events unfolding across college campuses. It's your friendly neighborhood progressive mom and amateur historian, here to chat about the recent antics that have me scratching my head in disbelief.
So, picture this: universities, those hallowed halls of higher learning where minds are supposed to expand and ideas are meant to flourish. And yet, we find ourselves witnessing anti-Gaza student protesters being met with hostile police force, all at the behest of these very institutions. It's like a bad remake of "1984," and I'm not sure if I want a front-row seat or if I'd rather run for the hills.
But here's the kicker: history has a funny way of repeating itself, and suppressing student protests has never ended well for those on the wrong side of the textbooks. From the Vietnam War to Apartheid in South Africa, the echoes of student voices silenced by batons and bulldozers still reverberate through the annals of time.
Now, call me old-fashioned, but isn't the whole point of a university to encourage critical thinking and foster a culture of debate? It's like trying to teach a fish to juggle; you're missing the point entirely. And yet, here we are, watching as universities betray their own mission statements in the name of maintaining the status quo.
So, here's my humble plea to those in positions of power at our higher educational institutions: Let's not be the villains in the history books. Let's be the ones who stand on the right side of progress, who champion free speech and civil discourse, even when it's uncomfortable. Because if we don't, well, let's just say I'd rather not find out what chapter we end up in.
Stay vigilant,
Edil Mari De Los Reyes
