My resolution to the SF Democratic Party

** Hate is an Epidemic
------------------------------------------------------------
Hi John,
Today, alongside support from the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, I introduced a resolution to the SF Democratic Party to declare racism and hate incidents as a public health crisis.
Hate crimes are rising exponentially across the nation and the health implications for survivors is devastating.
This last month, hate crimes have been reported at an increasing frequency in SF. A black resident of Alamo Square was sent a doll with a noose. An Asian American teenager was called racial slurs on Muni. A mosque was vandalized on our holy day of Eid. This does not represent our city or our inclusive and Democratic values.
In 2020, anti-Black hate crimes rose 60% across the country. In 2021, anti-Asian hate crimes rose 125%. In 2022, anti-Trans hate crimes rose 35%. Over the last 10 years, hate crimes have doubled from 5,843 to 11,643 a year in the US.
We are clearly facing an epidemic of hate. Racism and hate is spreading like a virus. And like a virus, it is mutating from one marginalized group to another. It is indiscriminate about whom it targets.
Racism is the next epidemic we must fight.
Every day we don't address racism in SF, our marginalized communities suffer. Survivors of hate face increased risk of depression, inflammation, and somatization that has been documented. Evidence shows this can be passed down epigenetically as generational trauma.
My resolution will accordingly have the SF Democratic Party declare racism as not just a public safety priority, but a public health imperative. And so I am calling for our public health dollars to support survivors of racism, hate incidents, and hate crimes.
This is a critical time. We’re in AAPI Heritage Month. We’re going into Pride and Juneteenth. And our communities deserve to celebrate proudly and live unafraid.
This resolution is the start of that effort.
An effort to have San Francisco lead in supporting all survivors of hate, to bridge our public safety and public health apparatuses to support our most vulnerable populations, and most importantly, to heal our communities.
Hate is an epidemic. It's time we start treating it as one.
Sincerely,
Bilal Mahmood
