Arkansas, National Leaders Unveil Daisy Bates Statue at U.S. Capitol
Civil-rights leader Daisy Bates joined a short list of Americans honored at the U.S. Capitol as Arkansas and national leaders on Wednesday unveiled a bronze statue of the activist best known for her mentorship of the Little Rock Nine.
"Our Capitol is filled with monuments to our history, and those inside teach us about where we were, where we are, and where we are going as a people," House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said during the ceremony in National Statuary Hall, adding "Mrs. Bates" has a "rightful place in the hallowed grounds of American democracy."
