John,
Idaho doesn't usually get much attention when it comes to national politics. But there are over a quarter of a million independent voters there who can’t vote and are treated as second-class citizens because of closed primaries.
Open Primaries is committed to a simple premise: no American should be forced to join a political party in order to vote.
THE GOOD NEWS: this could all change in 2024.
Our friends and colleagues at Idahoans for Open Primaries are hard at work gathering the signatures they need to get a top four nonpartisan primary initiative with ranked choice voting (like Alaska!) on the 2024 Idaho ballot.
And the campaign should have all the signatures they need to qualify within weeks!
Ten years ago, a renegade group of Idaho party insiders sued the state and succeeded in closing the primaries. Politics in the state have been a disaster ever since
Now a broad coalition of Republicans, Democrats and independents are reclaiming their primary and demanding real CHOICES for Idaho voters–not just the most extreme, party-backed candidates.
Open Primaries is proud to be supporting and assisting the Idaho campaign. Everytime there’s a reform win in one state, other states around the country feel the effect of that win and benefit from it. Idaho is just one of twelve states right now developing open primary campaigns. There’s a lot of reasons to be hopeful on the reform front.
