The recent 8th Circuit ruling is one of the most dangerous anti-voter rulings we’ve seen in years. In the eight states impacted by the ruling, voters and voting rights organizations can no longer sue to overturn unjust laws under the Voting Rights Act.
In plain language -- pro-voting lawsuits brought in states like Wisconsin, Georgia, Florida, and others nationwide wouldn't be possible anymore if the Supreme Court backs up this ruling and gets rid of the "private right of action".
We won’t sugarcoat this: That ruling could be a crushing blow to many voting rights organizations, including Voter Action Project. If this ruling is not overturned by a higher court, it could unravel all of the great work organizations like ours are doing across the country — and allow dozens of unjust, unconstitutional voter restrictions to stand.
This attack on the Voting Rights Act highlights the importance of the other work we’ll do over the next year, as well: Voter registration, education, mobilization and more. As voter suppression laws become increasingly targeted and oppressive, our work to combat them must become smarter, stronger and more accessible to everyone.
John, we have to fight harder than ever to protect the right to vote in 2024. Please pitch in $25 or whatever you can to stand with us in a crucial moment >>
