"Suppose 53 million low-wage workers across the United States seized control of politics. See the hotel maids washing bed sheets and migrants in blood-splattered aprons at meat plants mobilizing for their interests. See baggy-eyes nurses and fast-food staff take part in mass uprisings. Now imagine millions of poor people standing in long lines to vote. America would marvel at this sleeping giant now awake." - Nicholas Powers, Truthout
Can the Poor People's Campaign change the outcome of the 2024 elections? Yes! And, we cry loudly, "WE ARE THAT MOVEMENT" that will wake the sleeping giant of poor and low-wage, infrequent voters and flex our powerful votes as demands for a 3rd Reconstruction! When do we want it? NOW! We won't be silent as politicians, in DC continue to ignore the demands of the 148,000 poor and low-income eligible voters who make up 22 percent of the electorate in our state!
John, did you know that if poor and low-income people voted at the same or greater percentage as people of higher incomes, they would have the power to sway election outcomes in every state? This is why the DC Poor People's Campaign is organizing a team of volunteers to Get Out the Vote and to build power for the long haul! Can we count you in our number? No previous experience is needed, the Poor People's Campaign will train all volunteers! Reply 'yes' to this email to let us know we can count on you!
In our report, Waking the Sleeping Giant, we prove that the biggest opportunity to build support for a moral agenda that lifts from the bottom is among poor and low-income voters, and that such voter engagement must be across geography, race, and other lines of division.
The narrative that poor and low-wage people are apathetic about politics or don’t care enough to vote is just another tired myth. In actuality, there is great, untapped power among these tens of millions of people, who often don’t see their demands– such as housing, healthcare, and living wages– reflected by those seeking election. They are like a sleeping giant and we have only felt its midnight stirrings. John, we are waking this sleeping giant in DC and across this country and we can't do it without you! Can we count on you? Reply 'yes' to this email to let us know you're in!
