Shoutout to my mom who’s never stopped providing care and support to me and now to my children as well!

The Other Shoe

Wishing all the moms and mom figures a very special day today. While not everyone may be a mother, each of us is the outcome of our mother’s work and how they shaped our life. Motherhood is an overwhelmingly rewarding and relentless job; I feel this as I am trying to type and make cookies with my kids while avoiding sprinkles inside my keyboard.

As a mom, there is no limit to what I would do for my children to provide them with a safe space to thrive. This week brought two mom perspectives into chilling reality as the anti-immigration HCR 2060, a Frankenstein-ish sequel to SB 1070, came back to life in the Senate. This policy, like its predecessor, allows police to racially profile people of color everywhere in our state. It is a border bill without borders. Setting aside the fact that immigration reform was derailed months ago by Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans, that this policy is proven unconstitutional, and that the economic blowbacks range from millions in legal fees to billions in lost revenue, I have to think - what about the moms?

Among those risking their lives to seek asylum in our country, fleeing areas of violence, poverty, and climate crisis, are women and children. Among those harmed by racial profiling and mass incarceration are moms, their families, and their children.

This session has brought several divisive and discriminatory policies and HCR 2060 is a combination of the worst of them. The Senate may take their vote on Tuesday and we may hear it in the House as early as Wednesday. Please reach out to let the Senate know that immigration policy is a federal issue and that discrimination has no place in our state.

With kindness,

Sarah

Congrats, Grads!

Loyola Academy of Brophy Graduating class of 2024!

Another shout out to all the moms celebrating the academic accomplishments of their children graduating this month. I watched with pride as a talented group of young men from Loyola Academy announced their college plans. For most, they will be the first in their families to blaze a path of higher education.

Two of them from LD 5 were among the group, one a National Merit finalist and one going to study pre-law at Gonzaga. I wish them the best as they embark on this next adventure.

Congrats to those starting new chapters in their educational lives!

Community Corner

St. Vincent De Paul held a ribbon cutting for their new transitional homeless shelter. This building, Ozanam Manor II, will have 100 beds for seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and their pets. There were over a hundred in attendance, including Governor Hobbs, Joan Serviss from the Department of Housing, county and city elected officials, and community leaders.

This building was made possible through the combined efforts of the state, county and city, which is a wonderful thing to see.

As one resident who spoke said, at SVDP he ‘found compassion’. This is true when looking at the 98% success rate of those who successfully stay housed a year after receiving support from SVDP.

Teacher Appreciation Week

THANK YOU TO ALL THE TEACHERS, WE APPRECIATE YOU!

A huge part of our work is to uplift the important job of being an educator. Teachers play a long-lasting and pivotal role in our lives and deserve support. I come from a long line of teachers in my family and know firsthand their commitment to going above and beyond the classrooms for their students.

Outside of the handmade cards, treats, and gift cards teachers received this week, I hope next year brings progress in higher pay and support.

Thank you to the Arizona Education Association for inviting me to their annual conference. Hundreds of educators from around the state were inspired by NEA President Becky Pringle and AEA member, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

If you would like to knock on your neighbors doors on your own time we can get a canvassing packet over to you! Just sign up below:
