A system where every vote, no matter where it is cast, carries equal weight in deciding who is President: that’s the promise of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC), but it only takes effect once states with a combined total of 270 electoral votes sign on. With 17 states and the District of Columbia already on board, contributing a total of 209 electoral votes, we are just 61 electoral votes away from this groundbreaking change.
We are calling on all remaining states to join the compact for a truly fair and representative democracy where the President is elected by popular vote. It’s time to make sure the candidate who gets the most votes wins.

Exciting news: Maine has just joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC), becoming the 17th state plus the District of Columbia to do so! This historic step brings us closer to electing our president through a truly democratic process—a national popular vote. The NPVIC is an agreement among states to ensure that their electoral votes will go to the presidential candidate who wins the most popular votes nationwide. It can be implemented without a constitutional amendment, using the Electoral College itself. Once states totaling 270 electoral votes pass laws joining the compact, then it will go into effect, and the next presidential election will be determined by the national popular vote. As of this writing, states and territories totaling 209 electoral votes have now voted to join the compact.

Our current Electoral College system allows a minority of voters in key swing states to have a disproportionate impact on the outcome of our presidential elections. This was glaringly apparent in the 2000 and 2016 elections, where the candidates who lost the popular vote still claimed the presidency, highlighting serious flaws in our electoral system.
Electing the president by national popular vote would guarantee that every vote cast—no matter which state you reside in—would count equally toward electing the next president. We are calling on all remaining states to join the compact for a truly fair and representative democracy.
Sign if you agree: It’s time we elect the president by national popular vote.
