Hi John,
On behalf of myself and my wife Phefelia, I want to wish you and yours a wonderful Mother’s Day. Today (and every day) is a perfect opportunity to show your appreciation for the women who molded each and every one of us into who we are today.
In our Navajo community, mothers play the most important role. Our clans have traditionally been organized along matrilineal lines, with descent and inheritance determined through one's mother. Today, countless women throughout our rural district balance motherhood with a career — as a society, we must work to ensure our moms and families are supported. In Congress, I promise to always advocate for policies that are necessary for moms - and parents in general - to build healthier homes and communities, including investing in strong schools, affordable childcare, and access to healthcare for all.
I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the love and support of the mothers in my life. My mother, Mabel Donald Nez, inspired me to pursue a career in public service to help our neighbors and community members. My wife Phefelia is our rock, and her unconditional love and support has shaped our sons into the upstanding young men they are today.
I hope you have a blessed day creating memories with your loved ones.
Best,
Jonathan Nez
