First, during the 2016 campaign and throughout the Trump presidency, the media boosted Trump by incessantly covering his hateful, dangerous behavior because it brought a surge in viewers and online clicks.

Then, Trump lost in 2020. Fox News and the right-wing media responded by pushing the Big Lie that directly led to the violence we saw at the Capitol on January 6th. 

Now, Trump is the Republican nominee, and if you’re paying attention, you know he’s promising an autocratic second term that threatens our Constitution. It’s no exaggeration to say what the media does next will have a dramatic impact on the future of our democracy.

2024 is the news media’s biggest test in the history of our democracy. The bad news is that there’s already evidence that they’re failing. The good is that COURIER’s talented teams of journalists are already working around the clock to pick up their slack.
