John,
Being raised by my father, I was fortunate to have a grandmother who had a very big role in my life. She taught me care and compassion, to value everyone and every day, and to find the gift in every moment and celebrate it. She helped me become the person, leader, and mother I am.

It has been the greatest gift of my life to be a mother to my three sons. They taught me the true meaning of patience, humility, and empathy. They are a constant reminder that the work I do extends far beyond me or my lifetime. Every day, they give me my WHY: Why we must do everything we can as fast as we can to address climate change; to bring everyone inside with a safe place to sleep; to ensure safe schools, fully fund education, and invest in childcare and early childhood education; and do more to support families everywhere.
To the moms, grandmas, mother figures, and everyone else who courageously plays that role in someone's life – Happy Mother’s Day! Remember that motherhood is not an exercise in perfection. Motherhood is an exercise in true love – you for your child, your child for you. Let go of who you think you should be and embrace who you are: You are doing your best, you are making a difference, you are changing lives and changing the world.
And if this holiday is difficult for you, may the day land gently.
Onward,
Hilary
