I often talk about my father and the influence he had in my life. But on this Mother’s Day, I want to share with you a letter I wrote to my mother as her memories start to linger like fragile petals.
“Mom, dementia may be starting to blur the edges of your memories, but it hasn’t dimmed the light of your love. From the beginning, you showed me love like no other. I was born with a bilateral cleft lip, and through all the surgeries, the bullying, the tears, you taught me to let go of perception, to stand tall when all I wanted was to shrink and disappear. You taught me to not give up, even when things feel impossible.
My words will never adequately describe or give life to all that you gave me. Thank you for being my mom, for letting me shine, for always standing beside me and being my anchor.”
