How do you define a mother? When I reflect on the moms in my life, they inspire praise and gratitude—far beyond the margins of a Mother’s Day card. Because for animals, human or non-human, a mother’s love is immeasurable.
For a piglet, a mother is someone who sings to her when it’s time to nurse. For a calf, a mother is someone he forms an instant bond with. For a chick, a mother is someone who opens her wings to shield him. For all animals, a mother is invaluable.
But for the factory farming industry, a mother is nothing but a value on a spreadsheet.
Animal agriculture executives believe a mother pig is something to force into a metal crate so small that she can’t even turn around for her consecutive pregnancies. A cow is something without feelings—within hours of giving birth, her child is taken away from her. A hen is something to cram into a cage—so she can’t open her wings, at all.
But a mother isn’t something—she is someone. To her babies, and to us. This is why today, we also remember the millions of mothers trapped in factory farms.
Mothers give us everything. But factory farms can’t even give mothers basic kindness—or space for basic movements.
