Hi there, it’s Gerry.

I wanted to take a moment today to say Happy Mother’s Day to all of the incredible moms in the 11th and across Virginia. But I also wanted to talk about a special lady — my mom.

She passed away a couple of years ago, and I miss her every day, but this Mother’s Day is extra special because it’s also National Nurses Day.

My mom spent 45 years as a nurse, and I watched her dedicate her life and career to not only raising me and taking care of our family, but helping people when they most needed it. Thinking of my mom today, I want us all to remember to thank the mothers, nurses, and caretakers in our lives. I also want to be sure we’re actually fighting for women and working moms.

Right now, families are facing immense childcare costs and shortages, and attacks on women’s health care and freedoms. We’re also not doing enough for our children — in Virginia alone we’ve seen attacks on public education that are devastating our kids' futures. As for our nurses, we’re still facing national shortages and need to do so much more to provide more accessible training, support, and better funding for our health care systems.

Saying ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ shouldn’t just be a platitude. Today, I miss calling my Mom, but in her honor, I want to make a promise to Moms everywhere: I’ve got your back.

So, friend, call your mom today. Tell her you love her and thank you for all she does, and then join me in putting thanks into action for moms everywhere.
