John,
In 2020, I said that American moms are running on empty. We were waking up every morning feeling guilty that we weren’t doing enough, and we were going to sleep every night terrified that we were somehow failing our children.
That was during the worst of the COVID pandemic, when I was trying to be a mom, a Senator and a substitute elementary school teacher all at the same time, to help make sure my children were not falling behind.
Over the last 3 years, the cost of childcare has risen by more than 30%. People are spending as much as half of their income on childcare, and it’s just not reasonable for working families to succeed under those circumstances.
Helping mothers—and all parents—afford childcare and improving conditions for our children are critical issues that we need to be working on right now to support all of the hardworking families out there struggling to make ends meet. I’m hopeful that we can continue to make progress on this in a way that will make a huge impact on the quality of life for moms and their families everywhere.
Today, on Mother’s Day, I want to say to all of the moms: hang in there — we are in this together, and I will always have your back.
Thank you to all of the moms out there who are just trying to make their children’s lives a little bit better, and I hope you are able to have a wonderful day with your families.
