Friends —
Happy Mother’s Day! To all the hard-working mothers out there, we know how much you do. I hope you’re spending the day with loved ones, or doing something that fills your cup.
If you’ve followed my campaigns at all over the last few years, you’ve probably heard a little bit about my mom—her story of coming out in the late 80s in suburban Detroit and our experience struggling to get healthcare when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2009.
My mom was lively, spirited, and ahead of her time in so many ways. She taught me to be independent, assertive, and to seek out opportunities to challenge myself, to push myself, and to grow. I’ll never forget sitting in the car on the way to school as she simultaneously gave me pep talks and put on a full face of makeup.
In the big moments, I think about the milestones I wish she was here to experience and the questions I wish I could ask her. I think about the pride she would have felt at the legalization of gay marriage in 2015, and the pain and indignity she would have felt following the fall of Roe v Wade, as someone who so believed in fighting for those rights the first time around.
My mom, and her experience when she got sick and didn’t have healthcare, is why I first ran for Congress. And it’s why I’m still in it today. So on this day, and every day, I’m grateful to all of the moms, step-moms, mothers-in-law, and grandmothers who are changing lives of those they are raising in big and small ways.
Happy Mother’s Day,
Elissa
