Dear John,

After three weeks of lockdown, we’re all starting to find our own ways to cope with being at home so that we can stay safe and defeat the coronavirus.

And from the stories already coming through from people you've helped to support, we know it truly is something we’re all going through together, many saying they could never have foreseen how different the world would be today in the grip of the pandemic.

With everyone isolating at home, we’ve been inspired by how much everyone across the country is still coming together to support one another in so many different ways.

And we’ve been inspired by you, our supporters, coming together to make such a difference to people experiencing homelessness who are amongst the most exposed to the outbreak.
As always, you’re at the heart of everything we do, and together we’ve already raised £2 million!
This is incredible, and is providing emergency funding for Crisis' coronavirus response and delivering urgent grants to local homelessness organisations across the UK.
Thank you!
  • You’re getting people into safe accommodation: One of the most urgent tasks is to ensure people who are homeless can move into accommodation where they can safely self-isolate. In Liverpool, for example, we’ve come together with the local city council and StayCity Aparthotels to help people move into hotel rooms that would otherwise be empty right now. With people on the streets three times more likely to have acute respiratory problems, and so many others struggling in hostels and other crowded accommodation where it’s almost impossible to social distance, you’re literally helping to save lives.

  • We’re all in this together: Owen, who regularly attends one of our Skylight centres, where we provide services throughout the year, is one of the people who has shared his experiences with us. Working with Crisis, he moved into accommodation some months ago where he can now safely self-isolate, and we’re keeping up contact to continue providing support. Like all of us, he’s doing his best to cope with the lockdown:

“I felt the loss of routine and structure hit instantly. The lack of face-to-face contact impacted my mental wellbeing as my world suddenly became smaller. This could have destabilised me massively if I was as mentally and emotionally unwell as I was a year ago, living between a shelter and the street.

“And, almost two weeks into lockdown, cabin fever has begun to set in, with too much time to focus on fearful thoughts and irritable emotions. This makes it especially important to be mindful of what I’m grateful for, to value my relationships, and to embrace my surroundings."

  • We have the most impact when we work together: Watch this short video from our Director of Policy and External Affairs, Matt Downie. He talks about the campaign and how it's so important to keep working with government to make sure that support is given to anyone who's under pressure and at risk of becoming homeless due to the pandemic.

Thank you so much for coming together to respond so quickly.
There’s still lots to do. But we know that together we can help people experiencing homelessness to get the support we all need to stay safe at this difficult time. As Owen puts it:

“It is impossible to tell what the coming weeks and months will bring, and the current situation is concerning for us all, but we are all in this together, no matter who we are - or where we live - and for many of us, it has never been more important to come together and act out of love, a basic human need.”

Thanks again,

Jon Sparkes
