Dear Fellow American,
Winston Churchill once described Russia as “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery,
inside an enigma”—words that still ring true.
But given Russia’s current war with Ukraine—and Russia’s role in the shifting
balance of power in today’s world—a better understanding of Russia is critical.
Since Peter the Great, Russia’s place among nations has only grown. As it
transformed itself from a regional backwater to a great power, its politics and
culture influenced significant events in our own history.
At the time of the American Revolution, for instance, Russia was the first
nation to recognize the U.S. as a sovereign state. And in the Cold War period
between World War Two and the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991,
American-Russian relations became the focus of world attention.
The need for a better understanding of post-Cold War Russia, in light of its
current importance and its long history as one of the world’s great powers, is
