Hey y’all,
Nancy here, checking in from Youth Vote HQ. As a Bengali-American woman, stories about immigration and discrimination in this country hit close to home. Now that we’re in the middle of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, I wanted to talk to you about why this fight for our future means so much to me.
Since this country was founded, AAPI Americans have been subjected to discrimination, violence, and hardship.
As of 2022, 17% of undocumented immigrants are AAPI — that’s nearly 2 million people.
Almost one-third of AAPI people living in the United States are not citizens. Despite our influences in culture, food, and media, the United States continues to make it exceptionally difficult for our communities to obtain citizenship.
I know. It’s crazy.
But through it all, we persevere and are still the fastest-growing group of eligible voters in the United States.
So while we can celebrate our successes and honor our unique cultures this month, it’s more important than ever that we keep up the fight for equality.
Programs like DACA and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) are essential for us to work and live normal lives in America. Immigrants from all over Asia helped build our agricultural and transportation industries, and they need our help.
The bottom line is that all human beings deserve to live with dignity and safety. During AAPI Month, can I count on you to urge Congress to provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants: [link removed]
