Legislative Update

Mothers Day

*Happy Mother’s Day*

Dear Neighbor,

I want to start this week's update off by wishing all the mothers in our district a very Happy Mothers Day! Mothers play an irreplaceable role in society, providing unwavering love, guidance, and support to their children. Their nurturing nature helps shape future generations, instilling values of compassion, resilience, and empathy. Mothers are the backbone of families, balancing countless responsibilities with grace and strength. Happy Mothers Day!

*Religious Freedom Restored in Minnesota*

Tuesday marked a significant step towards restoring religious freedom, a right that had been stripped from faith-based organizations in Minnesota. The House approved a revised version of a bill authored by Rep. Niska (R-Ramsey), which amends the Minnesota Human Rights Act (MHRA) to reinstate protections for religious entities against discrimination claims. The Senate had earlier passed the bill unanimously, and with the House also giving overwhelming approval, it now awaits Governor Tim Walz's signature for enactment.

This legislative action was prompted by a 2023 HRA law enacted by Democrats, which removed religious protections that had been in place since 1993. Prior to this change, the existing religious exemption for sexual orientation also covered gender identity claims. However, with the introduction of a new distinct definition of gender identity last year, no corresponding religious exemption was included.

*Win for our Veterans*

Last Friday, House Republicans scored a huge win for veterans as part of the Tax Omnibus bill [ [link removed] ]. While overall, the bill was ill conceived, this provision creates a property tax exclusion increase for disabled veterans. At first, the provision was opposed by Democrats when its author, Rep. Mark Wiens (R-Lake Elmo), introduced it in committee. However, after some bipartisan discussion, Democrats agreed to add the language to the tax bill. This was the number one legislative priority of the Commanders Task Force and is a huge win for veterans across the state.

*New State Seal and Flag*

As many of you may be aware, there have been recent changes to our state flag and seal. Like many of you, I was disappointed that such an important decision affecting all Minnesotans was made by a 13-member panel. I believe our current state seal and flag are excellent, and any decision to change them should have been put to a vote by the people. Unfortunately, that was not the process followed. There was an opportunity to discuss the changes in the legislature, but the majority blocked our efforts to do so. The new state flag and seal will officially begin their tenure today, Minnesota Statehood Day, Minnesota's 166th birthday.

*Fishing Opener*

The fishing opener is this weekend and heralds the start of a beloved tradition, drawing anglers from far and wide to our state's pristine waters. With over 10,000 lakes and countless rivers and streams, our state offers some of the best angling opportunities in the country. From reeling in trophy walleye on Mille Lacs Lake to casting for bass in the Mississippi River, the state's diverse waterways cater to every angler's preference. The outdoors holds a special place in our hearts and lifestyles, deeply ingrained in our culture and identity. I hope you all get the chance to get out and catch some fish but be sure you make time for mom too!

Sincerely,

Bryan
