Jack, recent trends across the United States have seen an alarming rise in the number of book bans in schools, particularly those that provide critical perspectives on race, gender, and sexual identity.

This is not about removing a few books from school libraries—it's a coordinated campaign to suppress essential voices and stories. Ruby Bridges, a the civil rights icon, criticized the banning of books, particularly those about American history and systemic racism, as absurd efforts to obscure true history. She expressed that these bans serve as an excuse not to teach uncomfortable truths, particularly pointing out that such actions deny children of all backgrounds the opportunity to learn and empathize with her experiences.
We must take a stand now. .If we do not challenge these prohibitive measures, the future of our democracy is at stake. We are at a critical juncture where our actions can safeguard the rights for which our predecessors fought so ardently.

P.S. Below is an email we sent out earlier demanding a stop to book bans:
Jack, in the first half of the 2022-23 school year, 30% of banned books were related to race or featured characters of color, while more than half of those banned in 2023 focused on LGBTQ+ issues. Book bans are a targeted effort by GOP extremists to whitewash diversity, culture, and history.

Last year marked a new high for book bans. The escalation of book bans is a calculated effort by conservative advocacy groups and state legislators to curtail access to a broad range of ideas and stories. This movement is not just about removing individual titles; it's an orchestrated campaign to suppress free expression and erase diversity.
Book bans target marginalized groups with misleading rhetoric, labeling educational content as "pornographic" or "indecent" without basis. By creating fear and issuing legal threats and penalties, these book bans have resulted in widespread censorship, impacting a broad range of literature, including works that tackle critical social issues such as violence, abuse, health, and well-being.
The fight against book bans is about defending the right to a comprehensive and inclusive education.
