Last week, a new poll came out taking stock of the race to be the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate here in Michigan.

And the big winner in that poll?

“Undecided.”

Not ex-congressman Justin Amash.

Not multi-millionaire Sandy Pensler.

Not even Mike Rogers, who is telling anyone who will listen that he’s essentially the nominee now that he has Trump’s endorsement.

Instead, “undecided” had a clear majority of 54% of people polled. The next highest response, Mike Rogers, hardly broke 30%.

That may be why the GOP primary is messy and getting messier. Pensler, who is worth at least $80 million dollars, has launched a seven-figure ad campaign attacking Mike Rogers. These attack ads, which link Rogers to Hilary Clinton, are now running on the most expensive TV out there — broadcast TV — in the Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint and Traverse City media markets. And Mr. Pensler has said he’ll be running TV ads statewide all the way through the primary election in August.

This news all but guarantees that the Republicans will be fighting it out right up to primary day on August 6th, leaving just three months afterwards for the eventual nominee to campaign for the general election.

This is good news for Elissa’s chances, but only if we can take advantage of it by doing the early work necessary to introduce her to voters in all 11 media markets across Michigan. The next few months are our opportunity to get a head start and prepare for whoever comes out of the Republican primary process.
