Earlier this year, we forced the UK government to pull out of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), a bill of corporate rights in the energy sector that has become a major obstacle to climate action. With other countries leaving too, the ECT is on its last legs. The rules of the global economy prioritise the interests of billionaires and their corporations at the expense of people and the planet, but our ECT win shows we can dismantle them.
At From Plunder to Solidarity we’ll look at the way the global economy works, and the ways in which we in the global north are locked into a way of life which depends on ecological destruction. There’ll be an opportunity to hear from speakers involved in fighting free trade deals and extractivism, to get to grips with our campaign for a Fossil Fuel Treaty, and to understand the alternatives being proposed by social movements, such as food sovereignty.
