Dear John,
Israel’s incursion into Rafah is an incalculable tragedy for both Palestinians and Israelis. Children dying horrible deaths in this action does not serve anyone. Civilian casualties are part of any war, but this macabre drama is outside the humanitarian limits of acceptable collateral damage.
We must find a better way.
Biden should never have conflated support for Israel with carte blanche support for Netanyahu's military strategy. We can understand Israel's need to defend itself, and to defeat Hamas, without being willing to go along with Netanyahu and his war cabinet's strategy over the last six months. And we need to accept our own complicity, silently accepting - or only weakly criticizing - policies that for years contributed to the pernicious boiling point that finally erupted.
All that being said, let's not forget that Trump would be ten times worse. His position is basically: "They just need to get in there and do what they need to do and get it over with quickly."
Hundreds of thousands of Israelis, in addition to others here and around the world, do not want the invasion of Rafah and are trying desperately to make their voices heard. It’s clear that the Democratic convention in August will be filled with protestors, no matter what else happens between now and then. A storm is unfolding before our eyes that is still just gathering steam.
That’s why I want to speak at the Democratic convention. We can still be a voice of hope.
Volunteers are working hard to help us gain enough votes in the remaining nine states where we’re still on the ballot — particularly in Maryland, Oregon and New Mexico. They're doing everything they can to get the word out. This moment is too critical for any of us to be thinking about giving up. Our message is one of fundamental change, domestically and internationally.
Nothing short of that will defeat Donald Trump, and nothing short of that will heal the world.
