Hi there, it’s National Nurses Week!
Nurses are the backbone of health care systems and at the center of patient care and experience. This Nurses Week -- in addition to acknowledging their dedication, compassion, and hard work -- we want to celebrate the steps the Biden-Harris administration has taken to support nurses, doctors, and health care professionals.
These efforts have included financial relief, support for telehealth expansion, addressing burnout and mental health issues, and investments in health care infrastructure and workforce development. Here are some key highlights:
-
American Rescue Plan: Signed into law in March 2021, the American Rescue Plan included provisions to expand access to health care coverage and reduce costs. This included subsidies to help individuals purchase health insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchanges and incentives for states to expand Medicaid.
-
The Nursing Home Minimum Staffing Rule: The administration finalized a rule requiring all nursing homes that receive federal funding through Medicare and Medicaid to increase staffing based on residents’ needs.
-
Telehealth Expansion: The Biden administration expanded access to telehealth services, which was particularly beneficial not only for patients, but for doctors and other health care professionals. This expansion made telehealth more accessible to patients, which reduced administrative burdens for providers.
-
Public Health Initiatives: Beyond the pandemic response, the administration has focused on broader public health initiatives, including efforts to address mental health and substance abuse, improve maternal health outcomes, and reduce prescription drug prices.
-
Biden Cancer Moonshot Initiative: This initiative from the Bidens aims to accelerate cancer research efforts and make significant strides in preventing, diagnosing, and treating cancer.
President Biden and Vice President Harris have prioritized transparency and accountability in nursing home care and health care. This includes spearheading initiatives and publicly reporting data on quality measures and complaints. Actions like these help consumers make informed decisions about long-term care options.
