Multiple economic reports show Maine leading the race to the bottom
THIS IS REPRESENTATIVE NATHAN CARLOW WITH THIS WEEK?S REPUBLICAN RADIO ADDRESS.
THE STATE OF THE ECONOMY IS WORSE OFF NOW THAN IT?S EVER BEEN, AND MAINERS ARE PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO THEIR FAMILY FINANCES, BUT ALSO THE FAILURE OF THE DEMOCRAT MAJORITY IN AUGUSTA TO CORRECT COURSE AND IMPROVE THE LIVES AND LIVLIHOODS OF MAINE PEOPLE.?
THE PORTLAND PRESS HERLAND RECENTLY PUBLISHED THAT 41% OF MAINERS BELIEVE OUR ECONOMY IS HEADING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.
YOU DON?T NEED ME TO TELL YOU WE ARE IN A RECESSION.
THE SIGNS ARE ALL POINTING TO IT.
THE MAINE JOBS COUNCIL RECENTLY RELEASED A REPORT REVEALING THAT MANY MAINE OWNED BUSINESSES ARE SELLING OUT OF STATE. BUSINESSES THAT HAVE A LONG, STORIED HISTORY OF MAINE OWNERSHIP.
BUSINESSES LIKE OAKHURST DAIRY AND GETCHELL BROTHERS ARE LEAVING MAINE FOR GOOD.
AND THEIR REASON IS HARDLY SURPRISING:? MAINE IS DEEPLY HOSTILE TO BUSINESS. SMALL BUSINESSES ARE ENCUMBERED WITH SKY-HIGH TAXES, AND EXCESSIVE REGULATION.
MAINE RANKS:
* 48TH FOR THE REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT AND HIGH TAXES;
* 49TH FOR INFRASTRUCTURE; AND WE?RE
* DEAD LAST ON PROPERTY TAXES, ESPECIALLY FOR SENIOR CITIZENS ON FIXED INCOMES.
RICH STATE-POOR STATE CAME OUT WITH YET ANOTHER PUBLICATION OF MAINE?S ECONOMIC STANDING.
THEY RANKED MAINE 45TH IN THE NATION FOR OUR ?ECONOMIC OUTLOOK.? THEY CITED MAINE?S HIGH TAX BURDEN AND HEAVY REGULATORY POLICY AS THE CAUSE FOR OUR POOR SCORE, WITH MAINE RANKING:
* 47TH FOR PERSONAL INCOME TAX PROGRESSIVITY AND
* 49TH FOR PROPERTY TAX BURDEN.
MOST RECENTLY, THE NEW YORK TIMES RELEASED A REPORT SHOWING THAT MAINE RANKS AS THE 4TH HIGHEST TAXED STATE IN THE COUNTRY.?
STATES LIKE NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA WERE THE ONLY STATES THAT RANKED HIGHER AS FAR AS TAX BURDEN.
MY REPUBLICAN COLLEAGUES AND I HAVE SOUNDED THE ALARM ABOUT THE DIRECTION OF OUR ECONOMY FOR THE LAST 6 YEARS OF DEMOCRAT MAJORITIES IN THE STATE HOUSE, AND THEY HAVE FAILED DRAMATICALLY TO PROVIDE THE LEADERSHIP WE NEED TO DELIVER ON OUR FOUNDATIONAL COMMITMENTS, THEY?VE FORGOTTEN MAIN STREET, AND TOTALLY IGNORED THE PLIGHT OF THE MIDDLE CLASS.
NOW, THE RESULTS ARE IN.
MAINE PEOPLE DESERVE BETTER!
THIS HAS BEEN REPRESENTATIVE NATHAN CARLOW WITH THIS WEEK?S REPUBLICAN.

Rep. Nathan Carlow
is a lifelong Mainer, a proud educator, and one the youngest members of the Maine House of Representatives. His youth and independence make him an effective lawmaker, and a fervent advocate of the people in his House District.
In addition to his legislative duties, Nathan is serving on the Bonny Eagle school board. His dedication and work-ethic as a Board member has been noted by both current and former colleagues, and he?s well-known across the school district for his common-sense and down to earth attitude. As a state representative, his community has benefited from his level-headedness and willingness to work across the aisle.
Tragically, when he was only 11-months of age, Nathan?s dad, Michael, committed suicide. His mom eventually remarried, but the struggles his family experienced in the aftermath of this devastating loss had a profound impact on his outlook on life, family, and politics. He, like his dad, believes in doing the right thing for the right reasons, even when it may be unpopular.
His mother, Michele, is a nurse in Portland, and his step-father, Pete, works as a delivery man in Southern Maine. Both his parents instilled in him the values of hard-work, integrity, and a genuine love of Maine and his community. These are treasured lessons he has carried with him to the Legislature, and ones he enjoys sharing with other young people who meet with him.
In his second term, Representative Carlow was appointed to the Legislature's important Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee.
Nathan was born May 18, 1999, is a graduate Bonny Eagle High School, and is the youngest legislator ever elected in Maine history.
