Making the U.S. military green goes beyond the color of their camouflage uniforms.
SEEC Climate and National Security Task Force Co-Chairs Katie Porter and Andy Kim are leading the fight to incorporate green initiatives into the annual National Defense Authorization Act.
The U.S. military is the biggest line item in the federal government’s budget and accounts for 56% of the federal government’s carbon footprint. But, there are many ways our military can be a part of the climate solution. These ideas range from protecting the natural resources near military bases, to expanding the military’s electric vehicle fleet, and deploying batteries to prevent blackouts.
Meanwhile, climate change is already having a major impact on our national security with the intensity and urgency of extreme weather events, which have had devastating impacts on our military bases around the world.
This is why Reps. Porter and Kim are fighting to make sure this year’s National Defense Authorization Act will enhance the disaster-readiness of military installations, improve the military’s energy resilience, and safeguard our servicemembers’ health and safety.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
