Dear Neighbor
Hello from the Capitol as we near the final full week of the 2024 legislative session with many issues still hanging in the balance.
It will be interesting to see what progress is made over the next several days on some key issues. For example, you may have heard about a “compromise” that was announced regarding the Uber/Lyft debacle. While this may sound encouraging, “compromise” means all parties of interest are involved in negotiations, with a say in the final agreement. In this case, the people who announced a “compromise” hadn’t actually involved Uber and Lyft in discussions. These companies were not consulted regarding what needed to change from the initial ordinance proposal that caused this mess.
In fact, this “compromise” appears to have just made things worse. While Uber had already announced they would live Minnesota when the ordinance goes into effect, Lyft only stated they would leave Minneapolis. However, if this "compromise" becomes law, Lyft says they too will leave Minnesota entirely.
Sadly, last weekend WWE bailed on Minneapolis as a frontrunner to host a two-day WrestleMania event next April, causing our state to miss out on the economic influx that comes with it. This debacle of an ordinance is a deal breaker for any major event that wants to come to Minnesota.
The good news is there’s still time for cooler heads and common sense to prevail. Time is short, but enough remains to do the right thing and put forward a true bipartisan solution before it’s too late.
Sincerely,
Nolan
