Daily Docket — Friday, May 10

Donald Trump reversed his stance on early and absentee voting leading up to the 2024 election.

  • Trump — after years of peddling baseless conspiracy theories that mail-in voting causes election fraud — praised absentee voting and encouraged Republicans to vote by mail in a new video.

New developments in redistricting cases in Louisiana, Texas and Nevada.

  • Louisiana asked the U.S. Supreme Court to use its congressional map with two majority-Black districts for the 2024 elections after a lower court struck down the map for racial gerrymandering. The state says it needs a ruling by May 15 to avoid chaos.

  • The Nevada Supreme Court blocked a measure to establish an independent redistricting commission from appearing on the 2024 ballot.

  • The 5th Circuit is rehearing two redistricting cases next week in Texas and Louisiana where the future of fair maps hangs in the balance for Black and Latino voters.

Here are some other updates.

  • U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) introduced a bill to require proof of citizenship to vote in order to prevent noncitizens from voting in federal elections — something that is already illegal and extraordinarily rare.

  • On May 13, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will hear a case arguing that drop boxes should be reinstated in the battleground state.

    • In the latest episode of Defending Democracy, Marc and Paige explain what’s going on in the lawsuit, what to look for in oral argument and the potential electoral impact of the court’s decision. Watch it on YouTube and listen wherever you get your podcasts.
