Hi John,
Mother’s Day is about appreciating the care, sacrifices and support that mothers provide to their families every single day. We see you, we support you and we thank you.
But even as we celebrate, there is still so much more work to be done to ensure that working mothers and caregivers have the support they need and deserve to thrive in our economy.
That’s why the labor movement is fighting for a future in which all working families have access to higher wages, paid family leave, affordable child care, quality health care—including reproductive health care—and good union jobs. We also know that care workers, who are disproportionately women of color and immigrants, are among the hardest working in our country. They are the backbone of our economy because of the life-supporting work they do of looking after and teaching our children and providing around-the-clock care for seniors and people with disabilities. Care jobs should be good jobs with strong benefits and pay.
This Mother’s Day, we appreciate and support mothers and caregivers everywhere—and we fight for a better care system that ensures that America’s working mothers, care workers and family caregivers aren’t left behind.
In Solidarity,
Team AFL-CIO
P.S. Mothers are often part of the “invisible homeless.” If you want to support local food shelters in your area, leave your nonperishable food items out on Saturday for Stamp Out Hunger, the largest single-day food drive in America. Your letter carriers will pick it up! Read more here.
