Visit My Website for More Information Fighting to Ensure the Survival of the Lower Snake River Dams This week, I introduced a package of nine pieces of legislation to protect the four Lower Snake River Dams following the Biden Administration's release of the final package of actions and commitments in the Columbia River System Operations (CRSO) mediation, which undermines normal dam operations. I have consistently reminded the Biden Administration that the authority over the Lower Snake River Dams remains in the hands of Congress. This package is not only a staunch reinforcement of that fact, but a testament to our commitment to protect these critical pieces of infrastructure. These bills say the dams cannot be breached without Congressional approval, ensure our energy needs are met, and express that hydropower is critical in an all-of-the-above energy strategy. The Lower Snake River Dams are vital to the Pacific Northwest in order to keep energy costs low and have reliable service, and I will continue fighting in Congress to ensure their survival. Read More About the Entire Package on My Website Thanking Our First Responders for their Service to Our Communities This week, I led the introduction of a House resolution to designate May as National First Responder Month. Our first responders are the front line for the safety and security of our communities, and this resolution designating May as First Responder Month is the least we can do to recognize them for their sacrifice and commitment With crime at all-time highs, deadly drugs plaguing our communities, and emergency life or death situations happening every day, I thank all of our first responders—whether full time, part time, or volunteers—for their dedication and heroism in the line of duty. Read the Full Resolution on My Website Congratulations to Our 2024 Central Washington Art Competition Winner, Destiny Lepe I want to extend my most sincere congratulations to Destiny Lepe of Grandview High School on her winning entry, “Grand-view." Destiny’s acrylic painting showcases the beautiful landscape of the Lower Yakima Valley, and I look forward to seeing it every day hanging in our nation’s capital. The second place winner, Ruby Morales, is a 12th grade student from A.C. Davis High School. Her piece, A Snails Mission, is a colorful representation of a snail in its natural habitat drawn with colored pencil and pastel on an illustration board. As our second place winner, Ruby's piece will hang in my Yakima district office for a year. The third place winner, Ivonne Oropeza, is an 11th grade student from Grandview High School. Her piece, Seven, depicts a scene of sprawling landscape, flowers, and animals done in watercolor. As our third place winner, her art will also hang in my Yakima district office for a year. I would also like to congratulate all the incredibly talented students of Central Washington who submitted artwork to this year’s Congressional Art Competition. Click Here to See All the Submissions The Future of Agriculture This week, as Chairman of the Western Caucus, I led members on a tour of the Celebration of Modern Agriculture on the National Mall. This event celebrated America's equipment manufacturers, farmers, ranchers, and innovators, working together to drive the tradition of producing more with less environmental impact. It was great learning from experts from John Deere & GUSS, AGCO, CaseIH, and other agricultural trade associations about the new technologies and practices that will be available to farmers in Central Washington and across the country. As a third-generation farmer, I always enjoy discussing the future of agriculture with my fellow members of Congress, and I am looking forward to continuing these important conversations. Recognizing Our Teachers This Teacher Appreciation Week I would like to wish all Central Washington teachers a happy Teacher Appreciation Week! As a parent and member of our community, I am so thankful for the hundreds of caring teachers across Central Washington who are committed to educating the next generation and offering their steady support to ensure every student succeeds in the classroom. Teachers are essential members of our country—they shape the character of our youth and foster curiosity for learning. We must be grateful to all of them for the time and effort they give to all students, and the unwavering passion they have for being in the classroom. Whether you are a student or parent in Pasco, Yakima, Moses Lake, Omak or beyond, make sure to thank the wonderful teachers at your schools this week and every week for their enthusiasm and service to our communities. Raising Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Last week, I led the the introduction of a resolution to designate May 5, 2024 as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Indigenous women and girls continue to face heightened violence that is tearing families and communities apart. As of March, Washington State has over 100 open cases for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. We must ensure these heinous crimes no longer go under or un-reported. Designating May 5, 2024 as National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls will help raise national awareness to this crisis and serve as a reminder in Congress that we need to be doing more to support our threatened native communities. Yes No Recognizing Central Washington Medal of Honor Recipients Congratulations to Detective Edgar Salazar, Detective Curt Ledeboer, Corporal Omar Ramirez, Sergeant Kyle McCain, and Detective Korey Judkins for receiving the Washington State Law Enforcement Medal of Honor. You showed true heroism in the line of duty, and it is first responders such as yourselves that make our communities a better place. Honoring the Memory of Tiffany Ferdon I would like to recognize the memory of a devoted Central Washington public servant, Tiffany Ferdon. Tiffany was a volunteer firefighter/EMT for the Tonasket Fire Department and Aeneas Fire Department, and a dedicated member of our community. She tragically passed away in April, but her memory and legacy will live on in the commitment she showed to the residents of North Central Washington.   It is an honor and a privilege to serve you in Congress.
