It's shocking how many scammers are taking advantage of people's fears around coronavirus. People are being targeted with phone calls and emails, particularly preying upon seniors searching for guidelines on this pandemic. As relief checks are issued, we need to be especially vigilant against these predators.
Some common scams to be aware of:
1. Callers impersonating a medical organization claiming to have a vaccine for the coronavirus
2. Special deals to clean and sanitize your home with receiving payment up front over the phone
3. Calls or emails claiming to be doctors and hospitals that have treated a friend or relative for COVID-19 and are demanding payment
4. Charity scams claiming to help local families that have been infected with the virus
5. Offers for investments in new technology that prevents or cures coronavirus
6. Offers for testing with unrealistic expectations for results.
In a time of crisis, we must ensure that everyone is protected, including consumers. And as Attorney General, I would not hesitate to enforce the law against these scammers that are preying upon others' fear.
