-- Immigration Hearings

The House and Senate had dueling hearings on immigration Wednesday morning.

On the House side, Congressman Jodey Arrington's (R-TX-19) Budget Committee had a great hearing covering the cost of the border crisis.

On the Senate side, Senator Durbin (D-IL) held a hearing on the "need" for amnesty in the form of the Dream Act. Senator Graham (R-SC) opened with an insightful remark about the problem of offering amnesty in this environment:

"Number one, if we did start legalizing people now, I think you're sending a signal to keep coming… There've been seven to ten million people coming in. What do we do about the young people in the last three years? What do we do about them? I mean, are we going to have another round of the DREAM Act with twice the number of people? Is there any end to this? Where people come, brought by their parents, and you wind up staying and becoming a citizen? If that's the model to get to become a citizen, it's never going to stop. I don't mind dealing with the DREAM Act population but I don't want to incentivize endless waves of immigration."

The Senator is right that amnesty incentivizes more illegal immigration. Congress needs to focus on stopping the flow. The House sent its solution to the border crisis, the Secure the Border Act (H.R. 2), to the Senate. The Senate should act, pass the bill, and send it to President Biden's desk.

-- Another Overhyped Border "Fix"

Several media reports over the past week suggested the White House would be proposing a new rule to address the border crisis, particularly when it comes to asylum abuse. That interim rule came this Thursday, and to say we are disappointed is an understatement.

Rather than address the massive flows of illegal aliens crossing the border, the rule is focused on those flagged as national security or public safety threats in the asylum screening process. If you're wondering how many people of the thousands crossing every year this would impact, the rule provides an answer:

"The population to which this rule will apply is likely to be relatively small... For example, in FY 2023, only 1,497 (or about 3%) of all positive credible fear decisions were flagged…"

In FY 2023, there were more than 3.2 million encounters nationwide. It should go without saying- this isn't going to change the border crisis.

-- Did you know?

The moderate levels of immigration in the mid-20th century contributed to the "Great Leveling," when America truly became a middle class nation. Between 1940-1980:

- Real incomes of white males grew by two-and-a-half fold;
- Real incomes for Black men expanded by four-fold; and
- The Black middle class grew from 22 percent to 71 percent.

Those positive economic trends stalled in the 1970s after Congress restarted mass immigration.

Tell Congress to moderate immigration levels again.

-- NumbersUSA featured at huge Boston rally

Jim Robb spoke to 2,000 fired-up Massachusetts citizens at a rally on Boston Common. Observers stated it was the largest rally they had ever witnessed in Boston. Dubbed the "Close the Border" rally, the event sent a message to Boston and Massachusetts leaders that their policies were attracting thousands of new illegal aliens. The illegal aliens are costing Boston tens of millions of dollars in services.

"Good morning, Boston," Jim greeted the crowd. "Boston, Massachusetts, another fine sanctuary city. How's that working out for you folks so far?" As expected, thousands roared back with shouts of "Terrible!" and "Stop it!" Jim continued, "So what are you going to do about it?" He reminded the large crowd that an election was fast approaching. They needed to vote. But he also told them that a change of political leaders would not be enough. Laws needed to pass in Congress to outlaw sanctuary city policies and to halt illegal immigration. He urged every person there to go to the NumbersUSA website to sign up for activism. Hundreds in the crowd raised their hands to indicate they were already NumbersUSA members.

-- More than 250,000: chain migration

[link removed]

You may have heard the term "chain migration." Think of a "chain letter" or any "chain reaction." These terms describe phenomena where a single action sparks multiple new actions. Another way to describe this would be a "domino effect." Usually, once the chain reaction starts, it is very hard to stop. Half a century ago, lawmakers unintentionally built a chain reaction into U.S. immigration policy. They all said they weren't going to change the numbers. They were wrong. Nevertheless, that mistake remains as a core part of current U.S. policy.

Each year, the U.S. issues over a quarter-million green cards based on nothing but the fact that the recipient has an extended-family relationship with an earlier immigrant. Each of those quarter million can go on to sponsor additional relatives, who sponsor theirs, and so on, and so on, ad infinitum. America chooses the first immigrant; the chain reaction determines the rest.
