An Easter Message of HOPE

During this virus crisis and the election chaos in our state, it’s easy to forget this is the Passion Week, the time between Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday. Actually with families together more than usual, this is a perfect time to engage the entire family in commemorating and celebrating this special time of year. Plan faith-themed Easter egg hunts, do coloring and drawing projects depicting various events of this week, read aloud the Gospel accounts of this week, and prepare your children for worshiping on Sunday, even when you can’t be at church.

"I realize everything feels out of sync right now," says Julaine Appling, president of Wisconsin Family Action. "But we can rest securely knowing God is in control of it all; and we can focus on the positives, which I think is especially important for families. Easter deserves our special attention even in the midst of a national health crisis and an unsettling election cycle. With a little planning this can be a very special time for you and your family."

ELECTION RESULTS—OR NOT

Part of the excitement of participating in an election is awaiting the close of the polls and watching returns come in throughout the evening—whether it's a statewide candidate or a local election or referendum, or all of the above you are following. The April 7 election currently has us held in suspense since the time was extended for the ballot count. All absentee ballots cast before the election, all ballots cast at the polling place either early in-person or on the day of the election, and ballots that continue to arrive by mail that are postmarked no later than April 7 will be counted on Monday, April 13. Municipal clerks have been strongly instructed that no ballots are to be counted until after 4 p.m. on Monday, April 13, which means the long-awaited results will be available to the public at some point after that.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  • This is a time we can devote ourselves to praying for God's hand over this election as well as a positive outcome. CLICK HERE to listen to this week's Wisconsin Family Connection "Pray for Those in Authority" for insight on how to further be in prayer.
  • Consider assisting with the fall election along with many others who have offered to lend a hand. Click HERE to be added to our list of contacts so we can connect with you as needs arise. (Scroll to the bottom of the page.) We plan on offering postcard parties again, and we know you won't want to miss out on this opportunity!
  • Tune in to your television, radio, phone and watch the election results roll in on Monday!

GAMBLING: Wisconsin Simply Can't Afford It

"A federal decision on Ho-Chunk Nation’s plan to build a casino in Beloit, Wisconsin, near the Illinois border, might be imminent, according to a tribal official.

"The tribe has been waiting for the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ (BIA) ruling for almost a year now and it seems that a final decision might be on its way.

"The Ho-Chunk Nation, one of Wisconsin’s two federally recognized tribes, wants to build a $400 million hotel and casino resort along Interstate 39/90 in Beloit. The project had been stuck in bureaucracy for years before the summer of 2018 when BIA announced that it would review it."

Julaine Appling, WFA president, says, "Even while the casinos here are shuttered during the virus, we are talking about the very real possibility of having the state’s first-ever off-reservation casino. Wisconsin doesn’t need another casino now or ever. We have more than 20. With casinos come the loss of local businesses, increased addictions and crime, broken lives and broken families. We simply can’t afford a another casino."

CHURCHES/PASTORS: How To Navigate New Federal Guidelines

Wisconsin Family Action is very much continuing its mission and work during this coronavirus crisis. We believe one critical role we have right now is to help pastors and churches, as well as church members, understand both the federal and state guidelines and orders and how they impact ministries. To that end, we have a number of resources on our Wisconsin Family Council website HERE, including an important memo from a constitutional attorney on Governor Evers’ recent order and information from a CPA firm specializing in working with ministries.

We encourage people to access these resources, which we keep updating. One of our resources is a recording of a teleconference with US Senator Ron Johnson, state senator Dave Craig and constitutional attorneys Michael Dean and Rick Esenberg with Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty. We simply want to help pastors and churches have reliable information as they minister during this time. CLICK HERE to access the recording.
