John,
Our country is approaching a defining moment. Without exaggeration, the November election looms as an inflection point in deciding whether our 237-year old democracy will survive.
Here’s why. Extreme conservatives have known for years that progressive societal and demographic changes are working against them. As America becomes more diverse, tolerant, secular, and younger, the MAGA agenda gets more and more unpopular. Fewer people want to ban women’s reproductive choices and hyperventilate about culture wars. A growing majority wants to confront the climate crisis, gun violence, income inequality and other pressing problems. Inevitably, these political priorities will prevail in a functional democracy.
No wonder MAGA Republicans are working feverishly through anti-democratic means to lock-in their social agenda, undermine confidence in public institutions and elections, and stoke endless fear and conflict. They’re laying the groundwork for authoritarian government. All of this accelerated when Donald Trump became President – thanks to the anti-democratic Electoral College after Trump lost the national popular vote by nearly three million votes. Their work was turbocharged when they achieved their long-sought goal of securing a radical majority on the Supreme Court, something that would not have happened but for Republicans' anti-democratic refusal to allow a vote that prevented President Obama from filling a SCOTUS vacancy. Emboldened by the power they have amassed despite the unpopularity of their agenda, some MAGA leaders are openly saying the quiet part out loud: they no longer seek to work within the democratic system; they seek to end it.
With rightwing blueprints like Project 2025, and Donald Trump vowing to be more authoritarian than ever if he makes it back to the White House, we must not only take these threats seriously; we must expose and defeat them. Our democracy depends on it.
Think about what the radical Supreme Court has done in just the past few years – from overturning Roe v. Wade , to blocking environmental and public health regulations, to eroding church-state separation and re-defining religious liberty to include blatant discrimination. We are a lot closer to a dystopian rightwing theocracy than most people realize, and they’re just warming up.
In the aftermath of the terrible Dobbs decision, dozens of Republican-led states and courts have enacted or upheld harsh restrictions on abortion and reproductive care, often grounding their decisions in their extreme religious beliefs. Just last month, the Arizona Supreme Court upheld an 1864 near-total abortion ban, Louisiana began considering a law to criminalize abortion medication, and Florida enacted a 6-week abortion ban.
And, in case you missed disgraced former president Trump’s outrageous statement last month, he not only said that he would allow red states to monitor women’s pregnancies and prosecute them for violating abortion bans , but he also declined to say whether he would veto any national abortion restrictions.
John, the agenda of anti-abortion extremists is based on extreme conservative religious views that an overwhelming majority of Americans reject. And make no mistake, their extreme agenda does not stop with controlling women’s bodies. They’re targeting other fundamental rights including marriage equality. And since they know that a functioning democracy stands in their way, they’re taking aim at that too.
That’s why the stakes in this year’s elections could not be higher. If MAGA Republicans control the House for another 2 years – and especially if dangerous GOP demagogues take over the Senate and White House – I believe they will try to end American democracy as we know it.
It’s up to us to elect pro-democracy, pro-choice champions who will confront these threats and save our democracy. Are you with me? Please rush in a donation of any amount to help us prepare for the road to November. [[link removed]] <RUSH IN $10 [[link removed]]
