Overview: Speaker of the House Mike Johnson survived an attempt to remove him this week, which suggests a move to a more bipartisan way of working in the House.

The CCUSA government relations team was in Dallas this week facilitating a federal advocacy convening on solutions to homelessness. Catholic Charities Dallas hosted the event and provided a site visit to one of their St. Jude's shelters, which provide permanent supportive housing to formerly homeless people. Over 50 people from different faith-based organizations, local and federal government offices, and other Catholic Charities agencies participated and shared challenges and best practices in the effort to prevent homelessness.

Economy: In the week ending May 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims ([link removed]) was 231,000, an increase of 22,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 208,000 to 209,000. The four-week moving average was 215,000, an increase of 4,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 210,000 to 210,250.

Justice for Immigrants (JFI): CCUSA joined in a JFI letter to the president and congressional leadership asking them to keep in mind the humanitarian concerns involved in any immigration reforms or executive actions. JFI was established in 2004 by the USCCB. CLINIC, CCUSA, and other Catholic institutions have been long-standing coalition members. JFI's goal is to maximize the Church's influence on achieving comprehensive immigration reform with specific emphasis on securing legalization for millions of people lacking documentation and individuals residing in the U.S. with temporary immigration statuses, such as DACA recipients, TPS and DED holders.

Child Tax Credit: Along with other Christian communities, CCUSA signed a action alert ([link removed]) concerning the CTC that individuals may send to their senators.

Convenings on homelessness: Attend one of CCUSA's regional convenings on homelessness, which will be co-hosted by local Catholic Charities agencies. The convenings are part of a three-year federal advocacy initiative to empower Catholic Charities agencies and others to advocate for national legislation and policies to prevent homelessness. At the convenings, representatives from the government, Catholic Charities agencies and other faith-based organizations share challenges, ideas, solutions and models of best practices for addressing homelessness. Information gathered from the convenings will be used to produce a white paper and prepare for a national summit on preventing homelessness. Registration ([link removed]) is open for Philadelphia, Penn. (June 5-6); Providence, RI (June 24-25); and Phoenix, Ariz. (Oct. 24-25). There is no cost to register, but space is limited. A limited number of stipends for travel costs are available to Catholic Charities agency staff members.
