Dear Friend,
The global COVID-19 pandemic is a moment of unprecedented scale, great urgency, and very real consequences. Team #MediaJustice is meeting this moment by hosting the #Right2Connect Digital Townhall on Thursday, April 16 at 3pm EST. Register to join us! ([link removed]) From prison phone justice, to Lifeline, to broadband, the #Right2Connect means the right to access information and updates in real time. It means the right to stay in touch with loved ones and participate in our communities. It means the right to organize, to name oppression and fight for our liberation. It means the ability to earn income, and to continue our education. And right now, surviving a global pandemic by limiting physical contact means that the inability to connect halts all of these things.
Register now and meet us at the Townhall! ([link removed])
For years, we’ve been fighting to demand and defend our #Right2Connect. BIPOC communities, rural communities, and people living on low wages have been fighting to remain connected as Big Tech, the telecom industry and Trump’s administration have placed corporate greed over human need. The crisis is clear: the #Right2Connect must be included in government relief efforts, and we cannot afford for that relief to be insufficient or short-sighted.
Together, we can offer relief to our communities. Register for the #Right2Connect Townhall to do your part! ([link removed])
The essence of any Townhall is people directly confronting injustice and co-creating the solutions we need. Our Digital Townhall brings that power online. Featuring directly impacted people, FCC Commissioners and more, here’s a sneak peak of what’s in store and the topics we’ll explore:
* The Current Telecom Infrastructure Isn’t For All of Us (and Doesn’t Meet this Moment)
+ What does this crisis look like on Native lands?
+ How are barriers to the #Right2Connect impacting public health and safety?
* The Access We Have Isn’t the Access We Need
+ How can Lifeline be restructured to meet our connection needs?
+ What are our demands of telecom companies, FCC and Congress?
* They Tried to Bury Us But Didn’t Know We Were Seeds: Resistance in the Face of Disaster
+ What can we learn about Lifeline and broadband access from mutual aid organizing in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Maria?
This is just the beginning. We know from experience the dedication and persistence necessary to make real change happen, and we’ve always been in this for the long haul. We’re far from done, and we won’t stop until all of our communities have what they need to make the #Right2Connect a reality. We hope to see you at the Townhall. ([link removed])
In solidarity,
Myaisha and Team #MediaJustice
