Hi james,
Now that the dust has settled in the Indiana primary, it’s clear that the results were nothing short of an absolute disaster for Donald Trump. Sure, he carried the state but that was a foregone conclusion since he’s only candidate left in the GOP field. What definitely was not expected was that Nikki Haley, a candidate who suspended her campaign eight weeks ago, would rake in 22% of the vote.
Clearly, there is a large and motivated swath of the Republican electorate that does’t want to vote for Trump come November. Were his grip over the party as ironclad as he likes to pretend, Haley would have barely scraped together a single digit percentage. Instead, she garnered roughly 130,000 votes. A moment that should have added another jewel to Trump’s crown ahead of his RNC coronation has instead turned into a black eye for the MAGA potentate.
This embarrassment comes on the tail of a similar one in Pennsylvania two weeks ago. Haley managed 17% of the vote there (some 160,000 votes). Given the fact that Trump lost the Keystone State to Biden by just 80,000 votes in 2020, he’s facing a serious electoral problem with these primary numbers. If a sizable fraction of the people voting for Haley vote for Biden or stay home on Election Day — a not unlikely scenario given the fact that Trump has said that he doesn’t want Haley voters — then Biden could be headed for a roaring reelection victory.

The numbers will likely only worsen for Trump as we get deeper into campaign season. A recent poll from Reuters/Ipsos found that 60% of registered voters said that they would not vote for him if he’s convicted of a felony. And that eventuality seems quite possible at this point. The Stormy Daniels trial has been a catastrophe for the hush money mastermind so far. Mountains of evidence point towards a justified conviction. Whether or not the jury will ultimately decide to hold him accountable for his crimes remains to be seen, but Trump’s electoral prospects now balance on the edge of a knife.
As encouraging as all of these indicators are, we can’t allow them to lull us into complacency. Trump faces an uphill battle but the battle must still be fought. Our side has to show up to vote en masse to beat back this fascist MAGA movement. Good news can serve as fuel in the engine that drives us to help Democrats win. We need to double our efforts to share Biden’s achievements, warn others about Trump’s second term plans (telling them to Google Project 2025 is a good start), and urge our friends and family to vote blue. If you can convince even two nonvoters to register and pull the lever for Biden, you’ll have done your part to save our democracy.
Stay focused, stay energized.

DON'T BE A MITCH FUND
The "Don't Be A Mitch" campaign is back after a hugely successful 2022 cycle, having raised $1.2 million for voter registration groups ahead of the midterm elections. This year, with a tough Senate map, we have no room for error. I put together a list of organizations from 5 key states (Montana, Ohio, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Missouri) that I think are best situated to ensure that the Senate stays in Democrats' hands. Any amount helps!
